The salty sirens are scientists, when they study Great Salt Lake they often find rusty metal at their field sites. Salt can catalyze the redox reaction of the rusting process and we wondered what this chemical reaction would look like if brine shrimp were made of metal. Brine Shrimp (also known as Sea Monkeys) are small aquatic invertebrates that thrive in Great Salt Lake. They are a keystone species, providing a crucial source of food for birds.
These steel salt-rusted shrimp were created by local Salt Lake City, Utah artists at Bowerbird Art Studio (www.bowerbirdart.com) and are ready to adorn your surroundings and remind you of Great Salt Lake. They are 26 inches from tip to tip. Each stake has a male and a female shrimp on it that measures 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. If you want to do your own redox reaction we can send you a stake that is not rusted. Simply mix 16oz of hydrogen peroxide, 2 oz of white vinegar and 1/2 tablespoon of salt and spray or drip on the shrimp. Just put it in the notes that you will do your own rusting process!
Please note that the rusting process is not uniform and each stake varies.
